Converting Steel Forgings to Sand Castings
The forging process, in some instances, is the best manufacturing process for a component due to material grain structure and alignment requirements. In other instances, it leaves a manufacturer with a component that requires a high amount of post machining. Post machining costs include labor and machine costs as well as the often overlooked aspect of material waste.
A sand casting yields a component much nearer in net shape than a forging in many instances. Nearer net shape means less machining and material waste for you. An added benefit of choosing a sand casting over a forging is the greater amount of US based sand casting capacity versus steel forging capacity.
